Maji (also spelled as Majee) is an Indian family name of hindu religion. They originated mostly from the Indian State of West Bengal and may belong to Sahana or Ugra Kshatriya〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=User:Wikipada1234 )〕 as well as Kayastha〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Concatenated Bengali last names )〕 castes among Bengalis. Sahana is a mixed caste born out of the union between Sadgops rulers of Gopbhum and Punjabi Khetri rulers of Burdwan from the state of Bengal in undivided India. Kayasthas evolved as a caste from a category of officials or scribes, between the 5th/6th century AD and 11th/12th century AD. The surname Maji has been on record from Buddhist era texts as honorable titles. Since the title-holders had to do critical administrative work involving land and tax records for their respective kings and rulers; they were well educated.〔 By profession, presently, many of them hold prominent positions in premier research institutes in India (IITs) and abroad (mostly in the United States Of America).
